Following an extensive period of consultation, Manchester City Council has approved changes to Manchester’s planning policy, in a bid to promote healthier lifestyles across the City.

To tackle concerns about the negative effects of fast food on children’s health and on the impact of takeaways within district centres, the new Hot Food Takeaway Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) was approved at last month’s meeting of the Executive Committee.

The SPD will provide powers to control the opening times of new takeaways in the vicinity of schools, as well as manage the overall number of takeaways in the city. The aim of the policy is to promote healthier choices during children’s meal times whilst helping to ensure that our district centres remain vibrant and balanced.
